What a day

I started my day taking a history from a Palliative care patient. I had dreaded this rotation a lot but surprisingly, it turned out all right and I've come to the last day.

He was a really nice gentleman. When it was time for me to ask about his religious belief, he asked me to read the piece of poem pinned on the board. When I looked up, he was crying and I felt so bad for making him cry. 'Footprints in the Sand' was the poem.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
"You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,
"The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you."

Did it at least tugged your heart strings a little? I almost cried when I saw him crying. Control, control.....

Later that afternoon, there was an ethics presentation at uni and I had to rush back. So nervous!!! I have this chronic stage fright which I don't think will be cured no matter what I try. I get nervous even in pbl! How pathetic is that?

Thanks to S who wrote the brilliant script which rhymes. Thanks to everyone who put in so much effort to rehearse and memorise the script.....

And we won!!!!!
The prize for each of us was:

5 pounds worth of book voucher. Hmmm, what book to buy?

I came back and unexpectedly, I received another copy of the book I ordered a week ago:
What am I suppose to do with 2 duplicate copies?

First thought that came to my mind was, hopefully they won't charge me for the 2nd copy, then I'll sell it at full price.

Then I saw the return form:

Should I listen to my conscience and return the book? Tick that duplicated delivery box? Oppps, I unintentionally ticked the please give me full refund box as well. Hehehe.

Haih.....what to do??? Maybe let me wait and see if they charge me for the 2nd copy or not first.

Update:

They didn't charge me for the 2nd copy, but due to the good conscience winning over the evil conscience, I sent back the duplicate copy. Cannot start regretting now. I'm training to be an honest doctor not a ruthless business woman.

Pancake Day!

It's Pancake Day today, or officially known as Shrove Tuesday. Eating pancake is a tradition before the start of Lent.
Savoury pancake
Sweet pancake. Is your mouth watering?

Me too. How I miss the Dutch pancakes that I had when I went to Amsterdam 3 Easters ago. Oh my, that's a really long time ago.

PL and ML. I miss those times. Everyone was still so excited as it was our first trip out of UK!

AL and PP preparing for the attack

All photos has to be credited to AL cause they're from her camera. I couldn't find my photos as I left them back in Malaysia. Regretting now.

That day, after cycling for 4 hours, we came across this little Dutch pancake restaurant. Little did we know that we would cycle for another 5 hours after being recommended by the waitress that we visit Marken, a small fishing village, get lost on the way home, reached Amsterdam at 10pm, and wake up with whole body aches the next morning.

All the girls waiting for our dinner. I miss Amsterdam!

I did make some pancakes today. There were so many types of pancake, namely English pancake, French pancake, American pancake. I decided to try making the American pancake as it sounded more fattening.

The chaos I cause in the kitchen

Tadaa!

They taste as delicious as they look. American pancakes are thick and soft. They're quite easy to make as well. Just need flour, eggs, salt, baking powder and milk. I got the recipe from the Internet.

Since Pancake day marks the day before Lent, tell me what you're thinking of giving up this year and report back on Easter of your success and (hopefully not) failures. I can't wait for the Easter holidays!

Turning over a new leaf, if not....

Like what my personal message on MSN says at the moment,

Desperately turning every leaf I can find as I've burnt down most of the forest already.

Therefore, if I don't put in effort to revise and study hard before my trip in Easter, I'm not called Noreen anymore! (Maybe just Ooi Zhi Min. Hehehehe)

After months of suppressing the urge to go off traveling as it's my finals in June, I succumbed to the temptation of going to Greece this Easter. It was 3 days before when M asked me if I wanted to join and I battled between choosing feeling guilty or feeling left out for quite a while. Finally, I chose to feel guilty but unexpectedly, I felt happier that I've made the decision to go instead. Since I've decided to take a week off in Easter, I'd better start working hard now in order to make up for the lost opportunity to revise.

So, from now on, all of you won't see the lazy, procrastinating, always hibernating me. You'll see the hardworking, focused, always at the library Noreen!

I want to pass 4th year!!!!!!

Valentine's Day Superlambanana style and 7 coloured roses

Happy Valentines. Kawaii ne? This was set up at Aintree Hospital. I can hear the Beatles song 'All you need is love' playing.

Something interesting to give or receive on this special day:

7 coloured rose

The roses are so pretty that they look unreal

Imagine getting a whole bunch of them

So lovely. It'll be so sad once they start to wither.

If you didn't know the meaning of the number of roses that you're giving or receiving. Below is a quick guide.
  • 1 Rose = Love at first sight; you are the one
  • 2 Roses = Mutual love between both, deeply in love with one another
  • 3 Roses = I love you
  • 6 Roses = I want to be yours
  • 7 Roses = I’m infatuated with you
  • 9 Roses = An eternal love, together as long as we live
  • 10 Roses = You are perfect
  • 11 Roses = You are my treasured one; the one I love most in my life
  • 12 Roses = Be my steady
  • 13 Roses = Secret Admirer
  • 15 Roses = I am truly sorry, please forgive me
  • 20 Roses = Believe me, I am sincere towards you
  • 21 Roses = I am devoted to you
  • 24 Roses = Can’t stop thinking about you, 24 hours everyday
  • 33 Roses = Saying ‘I love you’ with great affection
  • 36 Roses = I will remember our romantic moments
  • 40 Roses = My love for you is genuine
  • 50 Roses = Regretless love
  • 99 Roses = I will love you for as long as I live
  • 100 Roses = Harmoniously together in a century; remaining devoted as couple till ripe-old age
  • 101 Roses = You are my one and only love
  • 108 Roses = Please marry me!
  • 365 Roses = Can’t stop thinking about you, each and everyday
  • 999 Roses = Everlasting and Eternal Love
Bookmark this post if you need referral for next year's Valentines.

Update!

Forced to update cause one of my friend just shared a killer tip for giving roses.

Add an artificial rose among the bunch of roses that you're giving, then say:

'My love for you will last until the last rose fades.'

And while using this tactic, start hoping that not many people read my blog or else they'll copy as well. Hehehe.

Conflict

Did I do the right thing?
Was I too late?
Why didn't I realise it earlier?
What should I do???!!!
Somebody tell me!
What if....Should I have.....the questions kept replaying in my mind.

Trying so hard to distant myself,
Not getting affected emotionally,
I won't be able to handle the situation effectively if I don't!
But those worries start haunting me as I lie in bed,
Drifting off to a troubled sleep.

Guilt, fatigue, worries, the unknown future,
Feeling so overwhelmed by all of them.
Someone told me that I shouldn't let this affect me this badly,
Should I kill all emotions and turn my heart to stone?

Heard some good news today,
I felt a rock lifted off one shoulder,
Breathed a sigh of relieve.
Hopefully everything will turn out ok.

Confusing Chinese Names

All credit goes to the original author. It is not intended to make fun of people with surnames mentioned below. Best effect achieved if you understand Hokkien, Mandarin and Cantonese, which luckily, I do that's why I almost 'pengsan' laughing. Have a good laugh.

Confusing Chinese Names

Caller :
Hello, can I speak to Annie Wan (anyone)?

Operator :
Yes, you can speak to me.

Caller :
No, I want to speak to Annie Wan (anyone)!

Operator :
You are talking to someone! Who is this?

Caller :
I'm Sam Wan (Someone). And I need to talk to Annie Wan (anyone)! It's urgent.

Operator :
I know you are someone and you want to talk to anyone! But what's this urgent matter about?

Caller :
Well... just tell my sister Annie Wan (anyone) that our brother Noel Wan (no one)has involved in an accident. Noel Wan (no one)got injured and now Noel Wan (no one) is being sent to the hospital. Right now, Avery Wan (everyone) is on his way to the hospital.

Operator :
Look if no one was injured and no one was sent to the hospital, then the accident isn't an urgent matter! You may find this hilarious but I don't have time for this!

Caller :
You are so rude! Who are you?

Operator :
I'm Saw Lee (Sorry).

Caller :
Yes! You should be sorry. Now give me your name!!!

Started with good food and ended with good food

Disclaimer:
The author holds not responsibility of ruining any dieting efforts, making stomach growl, or set off an insatiable hunger pang. Read on at your own risk.

It's not that I like puting disclaimers here. But since readers started complaining that I've ruined so many dieting efforts, I just had to.

Today, no matter what dieting plan we were already on or was supposed to be starting had to be put on hold as the food were just tooooo good. Thanks a lot C, for bringing us around in your sports car.

Lunch at Harvester:

They had a early meal discount menu before 6.30pm which was really worth the value. There were so many choices to choose from and the salads were bottomless.

Happy people getting their salads and enjoying their meal.

All the mouth watering food! From roasted ribs, garlic bread, penne, to cajun chicken.

I can say that photos can really be deceiving as it looks so much more delicious in it as compared to the real thing. I guess because in photos, you can chose what parts to emphasise whereas in real life, you see the overall picture.

Harvester was located next to the beach as well. But it was too cold for a swim. Beautiful surrounding, ambient atmosphere, delicious and cheap food. What more can I ask. I can't believe that I've already had my lunch before coming to this place, and yet, I ended up having my 2nd round of a proper lunch.

Cheshire Oaks:

Sorry, no pictures as I was busy shopping! Bought a really nice handbag from Monsoon which is big enough to fit my laptop in. So, it's going to be my hospital bag from now on.

Dinner at Yo! Sushi:

Last day of the offer and my first time stepping into Yo! Sushi.

Surprisingly, the Japanese food was good. We had dishes from the conveying belt and ordered others as well.

My mouth is watering again! It is expensive to eat there without the 40% voucher as my bill came up to 11 pounds each. Imagine paying about 20 per person without any discounts. Too bad I won't be visiting anytime soon after the promotion period.

Learning is fun when...

you are paid 25 quid to learn something useful!

There was this intubation study advertised among 4th year medical student at my hospital. Initially, I had already wanted to join that study even when there wasn't any monetary reward given.

Then, 1 week later, another email circulated around saying that each participant will receive 25 pounds for participating. Who wouldn't jump at that opportunity.

Intubation isn't as easy as it looks. Plus, I was made to intubate the model over 50 times. Not only the technique must be right, I had to take care not to break any teeth. My left arm and fingers were aching from holding the laryngoscope. But it was all worth it. I wonder who will be my first real guinea pig. You can say that I'm more competent than most new anaesthetists as I had more training and 'tries' as compared to them.

Learning practical skills are fun. Earning so much in 1.5 hours made it more fun. Plus, I'll get a certificate to add to my portfolio.
